ARRIVING MAY 2023

The guitar and bass revolutionised music, and electricity revolutionised the guitar and bass. Here then is a book of interviews, a personal selection by music writer Nick Awde of some of the inspiring electric guitarists and bassists who have made rock music great and continue to make it great.

Interviews include:

Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Dave Brock (Hawkwind), BJ Cole (session supremo), Dave Davies (The Kinks), Vic Flick (session supremo, ‘James Bond Theme’), Nicky Garratt (UK Subs), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Wilko Johnson (Dr Feelgood, The Blockheads), Chas McDevitt (session supremo, Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group), Francis Rossi (Status Quo), Kavus Torabi (Cardiacs, Gong), Bernie Tormé (Gillan), Bert Weedon (guitar pioneer & educator), John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia).

Denis Cornell, Jim Marshall and Charlie Watkins talk about creating the classic Vox, Marshall and Watkins amps.

The focus is on British guitarists and bassists and takes a chronological sweep from the beginnings of electric rock in post-War Britain to the present day. But rather than concentrate on technique, the interviews expand on how the musicians and their work and collaborations reflect growing up and creating music in the UK’s uniquely diverse melting pot of music. They talk about making a difference through their music and how they adapt to the constantly changing music landscape.

They explain the dynamics of working within a group, songwriting and recording, their reactions to creating a hit along with the slog of touring and the pressure of sessionwork. They offer insights into their backgrounds and their first breaks to help us understand how the UK’s rock guitarists and bassists learned to give their instruments such a distinctive range of voices across such a range of styles that continue to influence music throughout the rest of the world.
